Architecture Scholarships Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant field of ecology, and ideally have previous postdoctoral experience. Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and the metabolic theory is very important, and understanding of food web theory is very important. Candidates must be able to demonstrate ability to work independently in remote field locations. A strong track record of producing high impact peer-reviewed publications have demonstrated in the application. The Architecture Scholarships position is research theme concerns the influence of ecosystem services - in relation to natural weather-related facilities and danger - on the value of urban real estate market. The projects provide a broader context of research related to urban resilience to natural hazards and climate change and the sustainability of cities in general.

cellular immunology. The candidate will study the function of a novel
Transcription factor that we identified recently in effector T cells.
The Architecture Scholarships expression of this transcription factor is highly conserved evolutionary
in conjunction with a number of important functions of the terminal differentiation of immune cells. In this project, we disentangle the role of this molecule in T-cell immunity, with mouse and human T-cells. The Architecture Scholarships project includes both in vitro and in vivo T-cell activation, cell analysis by multicolor flow cytometry and molecular analysis at the level of gene expression. This project will result in the production and defense of a thesis.

* An MSc. degree in medical or biomedical sciences and practical
experience in immunology or cellular biology; having obtained a certificate
for conducting animal experiments (‘Article 9’ ) is an advantage;

The discipline of Statistics analyses and develops methods to interpret and draw scientific conclusions from data. The main research areas at the Division of Statistics are time series analysis/econometrics and structural equation modelling.

Eligible for a PhD position is the student with a Master degree, completed courses of 240 ECTS points, whereof at least 60 ECTS points on Master level, or equivalent. Further, the specific entry requirement is 90 ECTS points in statistics or equivalent. Solid background in mathematics and in applied science is considered a merit.

Doctoral Position Architecture Scholarships in the Department of Electrical energy, Systems and Automation, Ghent University, Belgium

PhD scholarship in “Development of a multipurpose micromagnetic and micromechanical simulation platform” Belgium

A PhD position is available to join the research team that develops the multipurpose magnetic software platform “MuMax”. In a collaboration between the DyNaMat and EELAB groups at UGent, we are currently developing this high-performance simulation package that allows to simulate, on the one hand, the energy efficiency of electrical steels as used in electromagnetic devices, and, the read and write processes on e.g. hard disks on the other hand. In all applications, the complex magnetic processes can be determined by carefully combining Maxwell equations with micromechanic and micromagnetic equations. The software resulting algorithms will be implemented on the most modern and time efficient GPU hardware available (GPU: Graphical Processing Units). Due to its immense computational power compared to standard CPU computations, the software will open a complete range of new research opportunities to understand the rich physics of magnetic materials that can be exploited in various engineering applications.

In practice this PhD work will focus in the first place on the development of numerical algorithms to solve large systems of coupled equations in magnetism. Depending on the candidates’ interest, the focus can be on the efficient GPU-implementation of the developed algorithms or on the engineering applications.

We are currently looking for a new PhD student with a masters degree in either electromechanical, electrical or physical engineering or a masters degree in physics. Scholarship Description: This full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship will include fees at the ‘home/EU’ student rate and maintenance (£13,490 in 2010/11, subject to final confirmation) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress. The Ras superfamily comprises Rho proteins, which increasing evidence implicates in tumourigenesis. Such is the case of members of the recently described RhoBTB family, composed of RhoBTB1, RhoBTB2 (also called Deleted in breast cancer 2) and RhoBTB3. These proteins may function as tumor suppressors in a variety of cancers that include breast, lung and head and neck carcinomas, as we and others have recently shown. We have proposed that RhoBTB targets proteins involved in cell cycle regulation or vesicle transport for ubiquitination, and derailment of this process may be at the base of the involvement of RhoBTB in tumourigenesis. In a two-hybrid screening of a mouse cDNA library we identified several binding partners and potential substrates of RhoBTB with clear implications in tumourigenesis: A Ph student will support the ongoing characterisation of one of these binding partners, MUF1. MUF1 (or LRRC41) is a poorly investigated leucine rich repeat nuclear protein that becomes phosphorylated upon DNA damage. It may be involved in regulating the DNA damage response or may function as a transcription factor regulated by the DNA damage response machinery. Notably, alterations of the DNA damage response and signalling pathways that regulate it play central roles in the pathogenesis of a very large proportion of tumours.

The PhD student will investigate the effects of silencing MUF1 on the cell cycle, proliferation and DNA damage response upon exposure of cells to ionising radiation. She/he will also investigate the response of cells lacking RhoBTB3 to DNA damage caused by cell irradiation and will undertake a search for potential targets of MUF1 using co-precipitation followed by mass spectroscopy. The proposed work will provide insights into the implication of RhoBTB into the consequences that alterations of signalling pathways regulating aspects of the cell cycle have in the origin and development of tumours.

As a PhD candidate you will work on development of virtual tools for analysis of Ecologic and Economic Impact through the complete lifecycle of industrial products. Flows simulation and environmental measures will be combined in order to include dynamic aspects in sustainability analyses. The tool development will enable companies to increase competitiveness by jointly improving sustainability and productivity.

The main challenges are: Which are the system delimitations and what kind of data must be included in a combination of productivity and sustainability analyses? Is there a standard to conform to? How should user interfaces be designed to effectively support integration of life cycle information in a discrete event simulation context? Which are the relevant sources for production and sustainability data and how can this data be automatically extracted, processed and combined?

You will be responsible for development and validation of a demonstrator showing how to measure and evaluate the environmental impact for a product during its lifecycle.

Required qualifications

Background

Powdery mildew fungi attack numerous plant species and cause serious losses on several crops. These fungi are obligate biotrophs, for which it is imperative to have a "haustorial" structure inside the living host cell for nutrient uptake. Defences are manifested at two stages: 1) during penetration of the epidermal cell wall when a protective cell wall apposition is formed, and 2) during the subsequent haustorial stage when the attacked epidermal cell can undergo a programmed cell death reaction. To counteract these defences, the fungus secretes hundreds of effector proteins that enter the host cell and interact with defence components.

Project descriptions

Two multidisciplinary PhD projects have been designed in order to obtain detailed understanding of the function of effectors form the barley powdery mildew fungus, from which the genome has been sequenced recently.

Project 1. Effectors that inhibit defences against penetration. We will screen for these in a relevant fungal cDNA library that will be available for this purpose.

Project 2. Effectors that inhibit programmed death of the infected cell. These will be searched for in on a one-by-one screening of our collection of YxC effector candidates.

In the searches for the effectors and in the subsequent detailed analysis of them, we will make use of transient transformation of barley single cells to see how over-expression and gene silencing influence the defence responses and how the powdery mildew fungus performs. Protein targets in barley will be searched for by yeast 2-hybrid screening of a barley library, and effector-target protein-protein interactions will be confirmed in pull-down experiments.

The research will be coordinated with international collaborators.

At the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, a PhD position is offered within crystallization of solar cell silicon.

NTNU and SINTEF have, over the last few years, built a strong research group and dedicated laboratories on the production, crystallization and characterization of silicon for solar cells in order to do research together with the Norwegian Industry and leading international groups in this area. Studies of the fundamental aspects of crystallization are very important in order to understand the formation mechanisms of defects in silicon, and hence allow production of high efficiency solar cells. A new laboratory scale silicon crystallization furnace will be soon available at the Department and will be used to set up a series of experiments to study crystallization phenomena of solar cell silicon. The project will be a part of the FME (National project) activity. The work will be done in a dynamic NTNU/SINTEF research team in cooperation with the Norwegian Solar Cell Industry and with internationally leading expertise on solar cell materials.

The successful candidate should have MSc degree in materials science and engineering, materials physics, chemistry or equivalent. Priority will be given to candidates with high temperature/casting experimental experience.

One-Semester Scholarships for University Students Reading German Studies: Australia

These one-semester scholarships provide foreign students reading German studies, German as a foreign language, or translation studies with an opportunity to spend a semester studying at a state-recognised German higher education institution.

Duration

One-semester scholarships are awarded for the summer (1 April) or the winter semester (1 October) and cannot be extended.

Amount Awarded

The DAAD pays a monthly award of 615 euros, a flat-rate payment toward travel and luggage expenses, a health insurance allowance and a book allowance. The one-semester program for students reading German studies is run at selected university departments in Germany. These departments provide scholarship holders with a guidance-counselling tutor. The DAAD is responsible for placing scholarship holders at the host higher education institutions, although, as far as possible, the wishes of participants will be taken into consideration.

Requirements

Applications for DAAD one-semester scholarships are open to excellently-qualified students reading German studies, German as a foreign language or translation studies and who, when they begin the scholarship-supported semester, have successfully completed their second or third academic year.

We are looking for excellent applicants with an interest in any aspect of visual communication and a high degree of motivation, autonomy, and openness to multidisciplinary approaches. The VisComX Research Center emerged out of an internal excellence initiative at Jacobs University Bremen encompassing top researchers in communication science, psychology, art history, computer science and engineering. Our goal is to foster and conduct highly innovative and future oriented research bridging traditional disciplinary boundaries. PhDs are offered in all of the contributing sciences, but the area of study will always be interdisciplinary with a structured 3-year program offering foundations in all four core disciplines. Students will participate in and create their own research projects. We have excellent facilities for social and behavioral research, visualization and statistics. We expect our graduates to be leaders in academic and applied contexts.

We are offering a highly stimulating environment with close contact to supervisors in multiple disciplines. Core faculty of the Center are 18 professors – there are further collaborations with other colleagues at Jacobs University’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Engineering and Science, the Jacobs Center of Lifelong Learning and Institutional Development, as well as Universität Bremen and Hochschule Bremen.

Jacobs University is a highly selective, international, independent, research university. USA: 2010-2011 Fulbright Senior African Research Scholar Program

Summary

This program is open to African professor or graduate school or a planned program of reading and research for the academic year 2010-2011 to perform at a U.S. academic institution or research. The proposals, dissertation research, postdoctoral research immediately after the conclusion of the Promotion or travel and consultation at multiple institutions are not accepted. This year the competition is also a special category for students of the proposals on HIV / AIDS and AIDS research. The program descriptions below refer to the professor. Candidates with independent research centers, museums or other cultural institutions, the objectives related educational institutions and research that may come to be considered and encouraged to apply.

Prizes will be regardless of academic discipline, the degree of power, gender and age. Preference is given to proposals that are more suited to the spirit and goals of the Fulbright Program: to expand and strengthen mutual understanding between the United States and African countries through personal contacts and exchange of academic and professional experience and skills under possible audience . In general, the preference given to qualified candidates who have no experience in the United States, or very little experience. A good knowledge of English is essential. The applicant must provide the nationality of Madagascar and currently lives in Madagascar.

The U.S. Embassy is pleased to offer three different types of scholarships:

1st African Research Scholar Program for Senior Research Awards: Senior Research Award for the eight fifty-seven months are held for teachers in Africa for the first start in August 2010 in March 2011 offered a U.S. university or research center study. The proposals, thesis research, postgraduate study or travel and consultation at multiple institutions are not accepted. Length of the grants is determined by the needs of the research proposal, as indicated in the proposed research. Maximum length of stay is nine months. Most of the selected candidate researchers holding a PhD. Preference is given to people who gave at least three years experience in university teaching, a productive scientific records, and their project proposals directly related to their current training and / or research responsibilities.

Proposals must be related to professional roles (teaching, advise students, administrators, university projects to raise awareness for teachers and other professionals) and to demonstrate how the scholar, the knowledge of new courses, curricula, develop programs or purchased University home. These scholarships are for students with less experience as principal investigator or, in academic circles, which are isolated from current developments in the study of the United States. The proposals, thesis research, postgraduate study or travel and consultation at multiple institutions are not accepted. The promotion is for a maximum period of five months available. experienced teachers who have Ph.D. eligible in this category, but have a strong reference letter or invitation. Preference is given to persons at least three years experience in university education and their proposals for projects to improve their scientific knowledge to improve education and help develop programs and curricula of their institutions.

3rd African Research Scholar Program - HIV / AIDS and AIDS research: scientists in a wide range of disciplines: sociology and social work, anthropology, education, economics, law, public administration, communications, art, theater, medicine, biology, psychology, for example, focused professional development and research proposals on HIV / AIDS are invited. Scientists can apply both as a senior researcher or as a program development and student curriculum.

Students Protest WVU Dorm Policy

Saying it discriminates against both homosexual and heterosexual couples, some WVU students are protesting a policy that forbids visitors of the opposite sex from staying overnight in dorm rooms.

Sit-ins will be held tonight outside most of the school’s 12 dorms.

“It’s a peaceful sit-in,” said Justin Griffiths, the university’s Residence Hall Association president. “It’s a student initiative.”

The demonstrations will start at 10 p.m. and last until 11:59 p.m. Griffiths said they chose to end the protest then because students can’t sign in opposite-sex guests after midnight.

Under the current rules, students have to sign in guests after 9 p.m., but Griffiths said there’s a way around that. Some simply have guests arrive before 9 and stay all night.

He said other dorm residents have neighbors of the opposite sex sign in their overnight visitors.

Griffiths said that could cause problems. Dorm guests are the responsibility of their host, who is responsible and could face penalties if a guest breaks something.

“It’s a loophole,” he said.

University spokesman John Bolt said the school doesn’t allow opposite-sex students to stay overnight even if they live in the same dorm. He said officials don’t police students’ rooms for illegitimate visitors, but do respond to roommates’ complaints.

“Most of this whole issue for us is a roommates’ rights issue,” Bolt said. “Even if it’s your next-door neighbor spending the night, if the roommate is not cool with that, we rely on them to let us know if there’s an issue.”

Griffiths said some students see the policy as discriminatory against gay and lesbian students. Homosexual students can easily sign in significant others for overnight stays while heterosexual couples don’t have the same privilege.

“It sort of implies there are no homosexual couples at university,” said freshman Genevieve Shapiro, an international studies major.

PhD student position in Software Engineering

The department provides a strong, international, and dynamic research environment with about 70 faculty and 70 PhD students. For more information, see www.chalmers.se/cse/EN/ Half of our researchers and PhD students are native Swedes; the rest come from more than 30 different countries. The research group is a newly established group in the division of Software Engineering and Technology. The group is conducting research on verification and validation, automated software engineering, human aspects on software development, software metrics, architectural modeling, validation of quality attributes such as real-time constraints and security, distributed/global software engineering etc. The work is broad in nature and utilizes a number of different theories, models, technologies and tools depending on the relevant industrial needs and constraints for each study.

The group has strong collaboration with research groups in UK, USA, Greece, Norway and China; it will be possible for the interested doctoral student to experience an extended stay at an international university as a visiting scholar. The group also has extensive collaboration with Swedish industry, in particular the aerospace, telecom and automotive industries.

Additional support for the PhD student will be given by the Swedish Research School in Software Verification and Validation (SWELL, swell.se) in which the student will take part.

Job description

Much of software development is changing from being plan-driven to being more agile and adaptive, with shorter iterations and cycles. Within the European Community (EC) there is a large research and development project underway to develop a new set of rules and methodologies for the European air space (SESAR). This will have a long-lasting effect on the aerospace industry as a whole and will impose new requirements on companies developing software for it. It will be increasingly important to verify non-functional requirements, i.e. that the developed software has the right performance, safety and reliability and to integrate such verification activities with the right mix of and economically motivated testing activities for the functional requirements. In particular this is a challenge for companies that see competitive benefit in using agile development methods.

The work focuses on finding better methods and techniques to test and verify safety critical software, in particular air traffic control software that is developed with agile development methodologies. It is based on earlier work with the space industry that developed a way to optimize verification activities, but will also investigate increased (semi-)automation in acceptance and system testing. The research will be conducted in close cooperation with and at the premises of SAAB Security AB (ATM) and is funded by SAAB and VINNOVA.

As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.

Required qualifications

English is the main language used in our research and we publish internationally. However, since this work involves Swedish companies with security clearance it is a requirement that you have a Swedish citizenship. We thus require that you know both Swedish and English well. Applicants shall have a Master’s Degree (Swe: civilingenjörsexamen) or corresponding degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering or in a related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, orally as well as in writing, are needed. Software Engineering is a broad field of study but we still assume you also have excellent, basic technology skills, such as in programming, designing and testing software. A successful candidate should have a profound interest in software engineering, agile methodologies and verification and validation. Experience from professional software development and/or agile software development is positive and its level and extent should be briefly summarized in your application. You may apply even though you might not have completed your degree yet, but you expect to do so before the position starts.
